This zesty peach and lime chutney is an easy way to try making your own preserves. Pair with cheese and crackers, cured meat platters or spoon alongside a leftover roast. Alternatively, package up and give to friends or family as an easy edible gift. See method
Ingredients
- 1.25kg peaches, chopped
- 3 limes, zested and juiced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 175g soft brown sugar
- 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 tsp mixed spice
- ¼ tsp crushed chillies
- 1 x 350ml bottle white wine vinegar
If you don't have any limes, try a lemon instead

Method
- Place the peaches in a large saucepan along with the lime zest, onion, sugar, garlic, mixed spice, chillies and 1 tsp salt.
- Juice the limes into a measuring jug and make up to 250ml with white wine vinegar.
- Add the liquid to the pan and heat, stirring gently, until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil and simmer uncovered for about 1 hr, stirring occasionally, until thick. Immediately spoon into sterilised jars, seal and leave to cool.
Tip: To sterilise glass jars, wash in hot, soapy water and rinse well. Dry in the oven for 15-20 mins at gas 1, 140°C, fan 120°C until hot and completely dry. Boil metal lids and rubber seals for 10 mins, then leave to dry.
