Try something new with a pack of hot cross buns with this indulgent French toast idea. It makes a decadent Easter brunch or dessert. Serve with melted chocolate for dipping! See method
Ingredients
- spray oil, for greasing
- 2 medium eggs
- 50ml whole milk
- ½ tsp almond or vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp mixed spice
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- 6-pack hot cross buns
- 100g bar classic 74% dark chocolate
- icing sugar, for dusting (optional)

Method
- Preheat the air-fryer for 2 mins to 180 ̊C and grease the basket with 2-3 sprays of oil. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, almond extract and spices.
- Carefully dip the hot cross buns into the custard with tongs, coating all over, then transfer to the air-fryer for 5 mins before flipping and cooking for another 2 mins.
- Meanwhile, heat the chocolate in a heatproof bowl in the microwave for 2 mins in 30-sec bursts until melted. Dust the hot cross buns with a little icing sugar, if you like, then serve with the melted chocolate for dipping.
Tip: This recipe uses an air-fryer. To cook on the hob, spritz a nonstick frying pan with spray oil. Over a medium heat, cook the coated buns for 3-4 mins each side until golden.
